Visitors to China - How to Apply for a Chinese Visa

If you're planning a visit to The People's Republic of China, be aware that a passport is not the only document required for entry. China has opened its gates wide to foreign tourists, but there are strict requirements that must be met in order to enter and leave Chinese soil. You'll need a Chinese visa so take the time to understand the steps to take in the application process.

The Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your home country is in charge of issuing Chinese visas. The kind of visa needed is dependent on the reason for your stay. Courtesy, Regular, Official and Diplomatic visas are available, each with their own official designation.

A type L visa is what tourists to China require for their travels in and around China. The type L is specific for those who are in China to visit friends and family, handle issues of a personal nature or who wish to visit China's beautiful cities and landscapes. This type of visa is by far the most popular as foreign visitors flock to China.

You must have a valid passport before applying for a visa to China. Be sure that it is current and does not expire in 6 months or less. If you're a frequent traveler, check your passport book to ensure it has at least 1 blank page. You'll also need a passport photograph in color or black and white which is 2x2 inches in size.

Visas are available for single entry or multiple entry for those who plan to move in and out of the country repeatedly. Your single entry visa lasts 6 months, and multiple entry visas can be good for as long as 24 months, depending on your birth status.

Visa applications must be presented in person at the Embassy or Consulate. The processing time is given as 4 working days, but it's prudent to plan for longer in case of delays or questions about your supporting documentation.

The price for a Chinese visa is $30.00 - $90.00 for non-US citizens. Americans must pay $130.00 for all types of visas.  The variation in fee is depending on whether the visa is for single visit or multiple entries.

More details can be found at The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the United States of America internet web page. This is an excellent resource for details on China Visa requirements and any additional questions you may have.
